6630 -> unlock 3g (dual) to GSM mode -> tutorial
Hiya guys and girls.
This tutorial is for anyone who has a 6630 but is tired of the poor 3g signal from vodafone or any other operator. Some of the earlier firmwares (2.39.151) of 6630 do not have the menu to switch the 3g/gsm (dual) mode to GSM.
With a bit of patience and persistance, here is a method to unlock the menu to switch between GSM, 3g and dual
DISCLAIMER:
Use this at your own risk, if you do not have any knowledge of GSM protocol and advanced engineering menus, you could do serious damage to your beloved 6630. We do not supply any of the softwares used for this as these are copyrighted by their respective owners. Please do not post any software requests or links.
SOFTWARE:
1) Field Test (Net Monitor)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1) start the field test application and go to menu 81.1
2) the current mode will be set to 0, which means your phone is functioning in dual mode.
3) press options
4) choose execute
5) type in the number 1 and press ok
your phone should now softboot itself twice, after that you will have blissful use of GSM, full signal. and ofcourse you can follow the same procedure to switch to 3g only or back to dual.
Thank
DK

Net Monitor?
Correct me if I am wrong, but with DCT-4 and BB5 (6630) handsets, doesn't the phone have to have Nokia test firmware installed to have the Net Monitor feature enabled?
Are things different with the 6630? Can Net Monitor be added without messing about with the firmware?

The software is not called NetMonitor anymore, its called Field Test (FTD), and can be installed without having to do anything to you phone or firmware. The screenshots you see are from my 6630, now working on 2.5G.
I have spoken to various Carphone Warehouse tech guys and currently they do not have the appropriate kit to upgrade the firmware of 6630. The latest firmware has the menu to switch between dual, 2.5g and 3g.
I couldnt be asked to wait to get the firmware upgraded hence the above tutorial for you all in the same boat.
Enjoy

Cheers for the info.
Found out what the file is called, had a look for it and it's only available as a cached link on two Italian forums, which doesn't work anymore.
Any pointers on where to find the file? I'm aware you specified no software requests, but a link over email/pm would do no harm
As for flashing the 6630, you don't need any high level Nokia equipment like FLS-4 or FPS-8. The 6630 supports ADL flashing, for which the only things required are the Nokia Phoenix service software, a PKD-1 dongle or a clone (like Phoenix Black Box), and a standard DKU-2 USB cable like the one that comes with the phone.
I've got the latest Phoenix service software (2004.46.5.76) and firmware (v3.45.111), 6630 schematics and service manuals, and official Nokia 6630 flashing instructions, but no PKD-1 or PBB. Someone I know has ordered a PBB, so I'll let you know how I get on with flashing my 6630 when he gets it.
And my 6630 has v3.45.111 firmware with network type selection, I just have a burning desire to purge all traces of t-mobile from it

This sounds very interesting. Do you know if this works even if the phone has
vendor-specific firmware?
I have a Nokia 6630 locked to Telia (Sweden). I've got severe problems with the phone searching for 3G all the time, when it really should stay on the normal GSM which works fine.
I've got the following firmware
V 2.39.129
27-10-04
RM-1
As I said, this firmware has some vendor-modifications, for example one of the menu-buttons always go to Telia Go, but I'm guessing that the settings that the program does should work anyway, or?

I would imagine it to work for all operators unless ofcourse the operator has taken some serious attempts to modify the firmware to remove the option completely.
Again, if the option was removed completely, the phone would not switch between modes at all.
There is no harm in trying.

I've done this procedure, and it seems to be working fine, the phone no longer tries to go to 3G all the time.
But I just noticed that wapping with GPRS no longer works. I set the phone back to dual mode, but GPRS still didn't work.
Could this be related somehow, does GPRS work for other people that has done this procedure?

Ignore that, must have been operator-related, it seems to be working now.

 FTD Software and AT&T
Hello everyone, I am new to this forum. I've been reading every forum I can find to try to solve my problem. This thread might be on target. Here's my problem:
I purchased the 6630 (SIM free), and use it on the AT&T network in the US. AT&T has merged with Cingular, but I still have my AT&T SIM. Anyway, I had the 6620 before, and all of my EGDE services worked properly. Now with the 6630 (also an EDGE capable phone), I cannot use the EDGE network. EDGE options are not displayed when I log in to AT&T's internet service (called mMode). The AT&T rep says the system recognized what kind of phone I am using, and taylors services based on that. I have changed every setting possible on the 6630, still no luck. I have downloaded and installed Fielf Test (FTD), and changed the setting to GPRS only, still nothing. My question:
Is there a way to use FTD to indicate to the AT&T system that I am using a EDGE capable phone? Any suggestions for enabling EDGE on my 6630? We don't have UMTS here in the States, so the best I can do is EDGE, and at present I don't even have that!
Many thanks for your time, and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
FYI, I am using firmware V 2.39.15 11-11-04 MR-1

welcome birdwatcher.
I dont think we have EDGE in the UK. Unless ofcourse I am wrong!!
I think there is a menu in FTD to test EDGE related info. I didnt get any values for that test maybe because its not supported by Vodafone.
I will do some more digging into this for you and post the results in a day or 2.
Cheers
